Gaining Weight Fast
So you wanna gain weight as rapidly as possible? The most obvious way is to eat as much food as you can during the day. However, this method may be hard for some because there is only so much solid food you can tolerate eating throughout the day. It could be either because of prepration, or simply just eating the food. One way to get around this is to use the GOMAD strategy. It was first proposed by Mark Rippetoe, the author of Staring Strength. GOMAD stands for Gallon of Milk a Day. If you drink a gallon of whole milk, you will get 2400 calories and 128 grams of protein more than you would if you were just eating regular solid foods. You'll also find that drinking the milk will be a lot easier than eating solid food. Milk goes down a lot easier and there is zero preparation.
Once you get to your goal weight, all you have to do is cut back on the milk and enjoy your new bodyweight. You will have a higher maintenence calorie number because of your heavier weight, so be sure to account for this before you completely cut the milk out.
Drinking a whole gallon of milk per day may seem daunting, but if you spread it out over the course of the day you won't even notice that you are drinking that much milk. For example:
8am, after waking: drink one quart
11 am - 2 cups
2 pm - 2 cups
5 pm - 2 cups
8 pm - 2 cups
11 pm, before bed - one quart
If you drink milk with your regular meals, you'll have no problems getting to a gallon. It will take some getting used to drinking milk with non-breakfast meals, but it's an easy adjustment and it won't make your meals taste any differently.
Going from drinking no milk to drinking a gallon of milk a day could be a tough transition. You can start by drinking a quart of milk per day and adding an extra quart each week. In a month you'll already be at GOMAD, and you will have experienced some weight gain along the way. But if you're already drinking some milk, or you just think of you handle it, try diving in, and starting GOMAD from day one.
Mistakes:
Not being consistent. Probably the most important thing when it comes to gaining weight is being consistent. If you don't consistently drink a gallon of milk everyday, then you will not get the results that you want and you will have drank all the milk for nothing. Drink the milk every day until you reach your weight goal.
Another mistake is using anything other than whole milk. This includes soy milk and reduced fat milk. Whole milk has the most calories and it tastes better than anything else. Yes, it has a lot of fat, but that is where the calories come from. Don't be afraid of dietary fat.
So if you're looking to gain weight fast, drink some milk and see how it works out for you!
